Geocaching for Learning!

Kids often ask when they will use the skills they learn in school in what they perceive to be "the real world". Geocaching is great way to introduce how classroom concepts apply to the real-world (Bednarz & Lee, 2019). The data used in navigation applications are the same tools used for geocaching! Collaboration, problem solving skill, environmental awareness, mathematical coordinates, and geography can all be supported through geocaching activities (Adanali & Alim, 2019).

At first glance, students may not understand what geocaching is or what it has in common with what they have learned in class. You may need to explain the activity prior to introducing it into a lesson. Students may see most of it as a game but that should be embraced by you as a teacher as that can be a great way to facilitate the learning of a new skill. The videos below are kids explaining geocaching for your students.
